Tom Gordon, Lib Dem MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, today called on the government to adopt a spatial energy plan to facilitate the transition to a net-zero future during a parliamentary session with Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary, Ed Miliband.

Representing several rural villages with significant potential for off-grid, local energy schemes, Tom is committed to ensuring these communities play a key role in the green energy transition.

In his question to the Secretary of State, Tom asked: ‘The institute for Civil Engineering has called for a spatial energy plan to utilise new and emerging technologies to facilitate net-zero future infrastructure planning. Will the government look to bring forward a spatial energy plan and meet with me to discuss this?’

Tom said:

‘Rural areas like those in my constituency have enormous potential for innovation in off-grid and local energy schemes, but they need the right framework and government support to make it a reality.

‘A spatial energy plan, as proposed by the Institute for Civil Engineering, would offer a clear roadmap for developing sustainable, resilient energy infrastructure that aligns with our net-zero ambitions.

‘I urge the government to take this seriously and work with local representatives like myself to explore how we can implement this in Harrogate and Knaresborough and the surrounding villages.’
