Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has pushed for faster progress in dementia treatment and prevention during today’s Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee meeting.

Tom questioned Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, on two key issues: ensuring new Alzheimer’s drugs, lecanemab and donanemab, are available on the NHS, and improving early screening to identify those at risk.

This follows a major milestone in Alzheimer’s research this year, with these new treatments proven to slow memory loss and cognitive decline. Professor Chandran described dementia research as being at a “tipping point,” with the UK playing a leading role.

Tom’s work in Parliament reflects his strong commitment to tackling dementia. Last week, he met with Alzheimer’s Research UK and local groups in Harrogate to discuss diagnosis delays, long wait times, and the impact on families across the constituency.

Commenting, Tom said:

“It’s clear we are at a turning point in dementia research, but we must act now. These new drugs offer hope to those affected by Alzheimer’s, and I will keep pushing to make sure they are available on the NHS. We also need to improve early screening to prevent more families from facing this devastating condition.

“As your MP, I will keep fighting for greater investment in dementia research to deliver results for people in Harrogate and Knaresborough and across the UK.”
