Last week, Tom Gordon MP began his time on the 2024-2025 Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, a programme designed to provide members of Parliament with a better understanding of military life that would otherwise not be available to them.

This scheme was established in 1989 by former MP Neil Thorne to address the limited military experience among MPs, which he observed was impacting the depth and quality of parliamentary debates on defence matters.

By signing up to the scheme, Tom has committed to dedicating at least 15 days over the next 12 months to working alongside a range of military personnel, gaining first hand insight into the responsibilities, challenges, and sacrifices of service life.

Harrogate and Knaresborough is the home to the Army Foundation College and many military families connected to RAF Menwith Hill - Tom is enthusiastic about expanding his knowledge to better support his constituency’s military community.

Commenting, Tom said:

‘I am thrilled to be taking part in the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. Our servicemen and women demonstrate incredible hard work and dedication every day, and I am grateful for the chance to gain a first hand insight into what life is like for them.

‘I believe it is especially important for me to participate, as Harrogate and Knaresborough have strong ties to the military due the nearby RAF base at Menwith Hill and the Army Foundation College.

‘I am looking forward to applying what I learn through this scheme to my role as MP.’
