Tom Gordon MP backs calls for EU Youth Mobility Scheme
Harrogate and Knaresborough’s MP has called for the government to agree a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU, which would allow young people from Britain to travel around Europe.
Both the previous Conservative government and the new Labour government refused and are refusing to engage with the idea. A similar scheme is already in place with other countries, such as Japan and Australia. Labour have said they will only do deals with individual countries.
The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a clear plan to rebuild relationships with the European Union, our closest neighbour and largest trading partner.
The EU offered the scheme to the UK towards the end of the last Parliament, but the government flat refused it.
Commenting Tom Gordon said:
“It’s disappointing that this Labour government doesn’t seem to want to deliver the change that millions of people went out and voted for only a month and a bit ago.
“We have got more of the same and they are letting down our young people.
“This is a clear, easy win. Young people would get the chance to travel and gain experiences of the world beyond our country, without it costing us a penny. Particularly when we already have schemes like this with other countries.
“We should be giving young people the opportunity to travel, work and experience the world, especially after the lost years of the COVID pandemic.
“Travel and experience makes for well-rounded people, which can only be good for our country. It is time to put our young people first.”
