Tom Gordon intervenes in debate to raise issues about high fuel prices in Harrogate and Knaresborough
On Wednesday, Tom Gordon spoke in a debate on fuel pricing, to talk about high fuel prices in Harrogate and Knaresborough, something that a number of constituents have written in about. Tom asked the minister what action she, as Minister of State for Industry, is taking to address this issue, and differences in pricing even between regions or specific areas.
In reply to Tom’s question, the Minister responded to say that the Government would direct the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate fuel prices around the country, which would help to determine exactly what differences in fuel prices exist around the country.
Commenting, Tom said:
“I have been concerned by reports from constituents about fuel prices being higher in Harrogate and Knaresborough compared to neighbouring areas. During a cost-of-living crisis, it would be extremely concerning if companies selling fuel were indeed price gouging in Harrogate.
“I am glad that the Government has committed to investigating fuel prices. However, once the CMA conclude their investigation, and we have all the information in front of us to establish whether fuel prices do differ by area, we need to see action from the Government to make sure that an essential form of transport remains affordable.
“I’m pleased that I was able to raise the specific issues facing Harrogate and Knaresborough in Parliament. Banging the drum for our towns and villages is exactly what I said I would do, to make sure that they get a fair deal.”
