Local MP Speaks at Transport for the North Fringe Event
On Monday, 16th September 2024, Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, spoke as part of a four-member panel during a Transport for the North fringe event held at the Autumn 2024 Liberal Democrat Conference. As a passionate advocate for improving transport across the North of England, Tom seized the opportunity to share his ideas for enhancing the region’s transport network.
During the panel, Tom emphasised the importance of strategic, joined-up thinking on transport, particularly in Yorkshire. He highlighted that regional collaboration is crucial for achieving the best outcomes and unlocking the North’s full potential. Tom also called for significant investment in northern transport infrastructure, arguing that such investment is not just an expenditure but a long-term investment in regional productivity, economic growth, and job creation.
Tom also expressed his excitement that the Liberal Democrats are back in the North and Yorkshire. He emphasised the party’s commitment to being a strong voice for their constituents, vowing to fight hard for the North and ensure it is not taken for granted by Labour. Tom is eager for the Liberal Democrats to develop a clear, united vision for tackling the challenges facing the North and to work collaboratively towards solutions.
Tom said:
“I am thrilled to see the Liberal Democrats back in the North and committed to delivering real change for our communities. The North has incredible potential, but we need proper investment in our transport infrastructure to unlock that potential and drive growth.
‘Strategic, joined-up thinking is vital if we’re going to improve connectivity and ensure that the North can compete on a national and global scale. This isn’t just about spending money – it’s about the future of our region by creating jobs, boosting productivity, and ultimately making sure that people in the North have the same opportunities as those in the South.
“I’m determined to keep fighting for my constituency, and the wider North, and to work with colleagues to deliver the clear vision and investment that the region desperately needs.”
