Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has secured an adjournment debate in Parliament this Thursday to raise the urgent issue of adoption breakdown - an issue that is currently being overlooked by the both local and national government.

At present, there is no standardised policy for how to handle adoption breakdowns, and no comprehensive data on how often they occur or what happens to the children and families involved.

Shockingly, some adoptive parents have reported being threatened with child abandonment charges by local authorities when they seek help.

Tom Gordon MP said:

“Adoptive families who are struggling should be met with support, not threats. The lack of a national approach means too many families are left in crisis with nowhere to turn. We need urgent reform to ensure families get the help they need before things reach breaking point.”

In advance of the debate, Tom Gordon MP is calling on those who have experienced adoption breakdown to come forward and share their stories. These accounts will help illustrate the scale of the issue and push the government to take action.
