Tom Gordon MP and Lib Dems secure commitment from Government to fund another year of vital Type 1 Diabetes services

Last week, the Government confirmed another year of funding for the Type 1 Diabetes and Disordered Eating services. This comes off the back campaigning by Tom Gordon MP, which has involved tabling questions to Ministers, asking for the Government to provide time to debate the issue, and a letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social care.
At present there are five Type 1 Diabetes and Disordered Eating (T1DE) pilot services in operation around the country, including one in Yorkshire and the Humber region. The services were funding until March 2025, and there had been uncertainty about their future with two previous pilot sites in Bournemouth and London having closed at the end of their initial funding.
Evidence suggests that up to 40% of girls and women and up to 15% of boys and men with Type 1 Diabetes experience some form of disordered eating, with T1DE pilot services providing integrated care.
Tom Gordon and Lib Dem colleagues have now got the government to commit to a funding extension to keep the services operating until March 2026. The Government has also instructed NHS England to seek more investment for T1DE services through the multi-year spending review for 2026-2030.
Commenting, Tom said:
“I’m glad that Lib Dem colleagues and I have put T1DE on the radar in this new Parliament and got the Government to confirm a funding extension to these important services.
"T1DE pilot services have demonstrated their ability to save lives and improve outcomes for people living with T1DE. It’s vital that funding is not only extended beyond March 2025 - but made permanent.
“This will make a real tangible difference to so many people. T1DE services are a lifeline for many, and are the first example of integrating NHS services so that people can get the care they need through a single channel, keeping them healthier.
“I will continue to pressure the Government alongside my colleagues to ensure that T1DE services continue past March next year.”
