Tom Gordon MP and Colleagues Urge Secretary of State to Secure Future of T1DE Services

Tom Gordon, Lib Dem MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has written to Wes Streeting, the Minister for Health and Social Care, to urge the Government to extend funding for NHS England’s T1DE pilot services. The letter, co-signed by parliamentary colleagues, follows Mr Gordon’s recent intervention in Parliament, where he called on the Leader of the House to allocate Government time for a debate on this critical issue.
The T1DE (Type 1 Diabetes with Disordered Eating) pilot services have provided integrated care that combines diabetes management with mental health and eating disorder support. These services have been proven to help patients recover faster, improve health outcomes, and reduce costs to the NHS by preventing repeated hospital admissions. The current funding for these services is only guaranteed until March 2025. Despite their success, the Government has not committed to continuing to fund the T1DE services, including for the Yorkshire and Humber services that serve Tom’s constituency of Harrogate and Knaresborough.
Tom Gordon’s letter to the Secretary of State highlights the findings of the T1DE Parliamentary Inquiry Report, published by Rt Hon Theresa May and Sir George Howarth. The report outlined the barriers to effective care and made clear recommendations to improve diagnosis, treatment, and long-term support for those affected.
Commenting on his letter, Tom Gordon MP said:
“Last week, I raised this issue in Parliament and called for Government time to debate the future of T1DE services. These services have already demonstrated their ability to save lives and improve outcomes for people living with this devastating condition. It’s vital that funding is not only extended beyond March 2025, but permanently. We also need to reopen the services in Bournemouth and London, and ensure that future expansions are considered.
“At present, my constituents still have the opportunity to use these services, but that might soon end. We need this care to continue, across the country.
“I urge the Secretary of State to act now to secure the future of these essential services and to implement the recommendations of the T1DE Inquiry Report. This is about saving lives, improving mental and physical health, and reducing long-term costs to the NHS.”

The T1DE Inquiry Report emphasised the need for a systemic approach to tackle Type 1 Diabetes with Disordered Eating, including the development of diagnostic criteria, integrated care pathways, and improved training for healthcare professionals.
Mr Gordon’s letter seeks clarity on funding for T1DE services in Cheshire and Mersey, Norfolk and Norwich, Coventry and Warwickshire, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and Humber and North Yorkshire, while also pressing for reopening services in Bournemouth and London.
