Tom Gordon Demands Action for Veterans in North Yorkshire

Tom Gordon has called on the Government to do more to support veterans in securing appropriate housing in North Yorkshire. Speaking in Parliament, Tom pressed a minister on what steps are being taken to ensure veterans get the support they need from local authorities.
North Yorkshire has deep military roots, with bases such as Menwith Hill, Catterick Garrison, and the Army Foundation College - located in Tom’s constituency of Harrogate and Knaresborough. Many veterans choose to settle in the region after their service, yet too many are struggling to secure the housing they deserve.
Tom has been contacted by veterans in Harrogate and Knaresborough who have faced significant barriers in accessing appropriate housing. In response, he challenged the Minister on how the Government is working with local councils to ensure veterans receive the priority and assistance they need.
Al Carns, Minister for Veterans and People, responded, highlighting the Op Fortitude scheme, which aims to fast-track veterans into housing. However, Tom made clear that more must be done.
Tom Gordon said:
“Our veterans have put everything on the line for this country. It is completely unacceptable that some are left struggling to find a home when they return to civilian life.
“I raised this issue in Parliament because the Government needs to do better. We must see real leadership to ensure local authorities are fully equipped to support veterans - not just with words, but with real action.
“I’m proud to represent a part of Yorkshire with such a strong military heritage, and I’ll keep fighting to make sure our veterans and their families get the support they deserve.”
