Tom Gordon celebrates the 100th anniversary of Yorkshire Cancer Research

Tom Gordon MP has submitted a motion to Parliament to recognise the importance and impact of Yorkshire Cancer Research in both Harrogate and Knaresborough and Yorkshire more widely. Since he was elected, Tom Gordon has visited Yorkshire Cancer Research’s headquarters on Hornbeam Park in Harrogate.
This year, Yorkshire Cancer Research celebrates its 100th birthday, having been founded back in 1925. Since then, it has been working with researchers, cancer experts, volunteers, fundraisers and people with cancer to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in Yorkshire.
Over its hundred years, the charity has funded pioneering research into cancer, clinical trials and treatment for people with cancer, saving lives across the region and beyond.
Today, the charity funds £64m of cancer research and services, including 25 clinical trials, giving people with cancer across the region the opportunity to take part in and benefit from innovative cancer research.
Commenting, Tom said:
“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the centenary of Yorkshire Cancer Research and all they have done for the people of Yorkshire and beyond.
“Their work over the last 100 years has transformed lives and pioneered new cancer treatment. They have played a huge role in the life of Yorkshire over that time.
“For a hundred years, Yorkshire Cancer Research have drawn attention to the people of Yorkshire, and helped to bring life changing cancer research and care in this area of Britain, ensuring that we aren’t forgotten.”
Dr Kathryn Scott, Chief Executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “The charity’s centenary is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the supporters, the researchers, the people in Yorkshire who, for 100 years, have united in one goal – a Yorkshire free from cancer. Thanks to them, the charity has brought life-saving breakthroughs and progress in cancer research to Yorkshire, and beyond.”
