On National Fitness Day, Tom Gordon, local MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, took part in a boxing class organised by Parkinson’s UK, a leading charity focused on improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease. The boxing class, held weekly at the Bilton Health and Well Being Hub, is part of the charity’s ongoing efforts to promote physical exercise as a crucial tool for managing the condition.

The non-contact boxing class is specifically designed to help those with Parkinson’s stay active and engage in exercise. Although there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, research shows that physical activities like boxing can significantly enhance mobility, coordination, and overall quality of life for those living with the condition.

Tom said:

“I was thrilled to be invited to the boxing class and to be able to support Parkinson’s UK. Their work is so vital, and inspiring. Having worked in public health, I know how vital it is to encourage people to have happy lifestyles, and what a positive impact exercise can have on conditions like Parkinsons.

“Despite never having boxed before, it was great to get involved and active. Boxing is not only an excellent way to stay active, but it’s also a powerful tool for building confidence and improving both mental and physical well-being.

“It’s great as well to be able to do this on National Fitness Day. It’s so great to draw attention to the importance of keeping fit and active. Getting people out and about and exercising keeps people healthy, and reduces pressure on the NHS. There are great classes and events in Harrogate and Knaresborough, and I would encourage to get involved with them.”
